Yesterday Apple announced that the newest version of the iOS operating system for iPhone and iPad devices will be released later this year. Version 7 of the iOS will be a complete overhaul of the operating system since its release. The entire user interface has been redesigned, which may delight some users but anger others. Apple calls the new look "stunning" but the majority of people may not see it the same way. Despite the look, with hundreds of new features, the new version of iOS is a vast improvement on the previous versions.
Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi stated that “iOS 7 is the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone.” He also called it a new beginning for iOS. Hopefully this new beginning won't put off current customers and will draw in others who have been sitting on the fence wondering if they should make the jump to the Apple world. iOS 7 is said to be simple to use for current users of Apple products, so hopefully the redesign won't hinder anybody who is used to using the older versions of iOS. However everything is now designed to be a little smaller since the Retina screen on newer devices allows smaller text to still be readable. I know some people think that the text on the iPhone and other smart phones is too small already, so I would bet that these people won't be too happy with iOS 7. However, even with my bad eyes, I don't mind smaller text. As long as it isn't like half the size it should be ok.
Many new features come with iOS 7. One of the new features is AirDrop, which allows users to quickly and easily share content such as pictures or videos with people in the close vicinity. The camera app in iOS 7 has many new features like new filters and effects for taking pictures. Siri now features male or female voices, along with a bunch of new features including Twitter and Wikipedia integration. For software developers, there are many new APIs in iOS 7. The beta version is available to developers who are part of the Apple Development Center.
iOS 7 will be available to the public in the Fall.
